About

UNGEN by Oskar Braaten – Adapted for the stage by Harald Tusberg, music by Egil Monn-Iversen – Revised by Marianne Sævig and Runar Hodne.

A raw and gripping musical. Passionate love, harsh reality, impossible choices, strong solidarity, and fantastic music. Oskar Braaten’s contemporary drama from 1911 returns in Oslo Nye Teater’s reinterpretation of the musical UNGEN.

Milja and Julius are in love, but their young romance falls apart. Milja is left alone, without money and with a newborn child. Unable to provide for the baby, she faces the hardest choice a mother can make: to let go of her own child.

In Oslo Nye’s UNGEN, the poverty along the Akerselva river is replaced by a modern welfare state that is starting to crack. The gap between rich and poor is enormous, and social rights are a thing of the past. What do you do when material resources are lacking? You lean on those around you.

With a live band on stage, the story of Milja and Hønse-Lovisa unfolds through Egil Monn-Iversen’s musical classics, including Lørdagskveld and Drømmen om morradan.
