About
From ABBA to Max Martin to Robyn, Swedish exports have been making indelible marks on pop music for decades. Zara Larsson is a worthy name to add to that lineage. Whether it’s her eye-watering vocal talent, her playful yet sensual musical identity, or her outspoken and unapologetic personality offstage, the Stockholm-born singer has got all the alchemy that makes a star.
Larsson rose to fame in 2008 aged 10, when she won the Swedish TV talent show Talang with a rendition of Celine Dion’s ‘My Heart Will Go On’. Four years later in 2012, she signed to Sweden’s TEN Music Group and in early 2013 she released her debut EP Introducing. The EP’s lead single, potent piano ballad ‘Uncover’, took her to No.1 on the Swedish and Norwegian charts, and has since been certified 6x platinum in Sweden. Later that year, she signed to Epic Records in the United States, and released her second EP in Scandinavia, Allow Me to Reintroduce Myself. That September, she made a trip to North America to support Cher Lloyd on the I Wish Tour.
In 2014, the still-teenaged Larsson released her debut album 1 in Scandinavia. Via confident R&B-pop, she explored youthful lust and love on tracks like ‘Carry You Home’ and ‘Rooftop’, which respectively peaked at No.3 and No.6 on the Swedish singles chart. The album topped the Swedish albums charts, and has been certified Platinum in the country.
2015 saw Larsson’s first international release with Uncover, an EP of tracks collated from 1. Later that year, she had her first international smash-hit with the summer dance-pop anthem ‘Lush Life’. The single peaked at No.1 in Sweden and at No.3 in the UK Singles Chart, spending 57 weeks in the chart; it has since been certified Platinum in 16 countries, including 4x Platinum in the UK. A month later, she released brooding EDM single ‘Never Forget You’ with MNEK, which hit No.5 on the UK Singles chart and #13 on the US Billboard Hot 100.
Larsson remained on the UK charts through 2016, featuring on Tinie Tempah’s ‘Girls Like’ and David Guetta’s ‘This One’s For You’. At the end of that year she was named one of Time Magazine’s 30 Most Influential Teens of 2016, alongside names including Sasha and Malia Obama and Malala Yousafzai.
In 2017, she released her second full-length album, So Good, which saw her explore a multi-faceted pop sound, featuring co-writes with Ed Sheeran and Charlie Puth. Clubby, winking single ‘I Would Like’ peaked at No.2 in the UK singles chart, with the album also making the Top 10. Along with the album release, Larsson featured on the Clean Bandit single ‘Symphony’, which shot to the top on the UK Albums Chart and earned a Brit nomination for Best British Single of the Year. That year she supported Clean Bandit on a North American tour, as well as embarking on her first major headline tour throughout the UK, Europe and South America.
Throughout 2018 and 2019 Larsson released a smattering of singles, including the dreamy ‘Ruin My Life’ and the Marshmello-produced electro-banger ‘WOW’. In 2019, she supported Ed Sheeran on his European ÷ stadium tour. In 2021, she released her third album ‘Poster Girl’, which showed off a more light-hearted and disco-influenced sound.
Larsson released her most recent album "Venus" in 2024.
