About
One of the UK’s most popular guitar-driven indie rock acts, The Wombats were formed in Liverpool in the early ’00s by two Scousers and a Norwegian – aka vocalist and guitarist Matthew “Murph” Murphy, percussionist Dan Haggis and bass guitarist Tord Øverland Knudsen. They met while attending the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts and began releasing EPs in 2004.
Something of an in joke, their name came from calling each other “wombat” whenever they made stupid mistakes. Plus in their early years, the three-piece took a giant stuffed wombat called Cherub to their gigs, calling him their fourth band member.
They had their big breakthrough in 2007 with the debut album "A Guide To Love, Loss & Desperation", which included the hit "Let's Dance To Joy Division", which has over 178 million streams on Spotify.
Over 15 years into their career, The Wombats are drawing larger audiences than ever. The viral success of Oliver Nelson's remix of their 2015 hit "Greek Tragedy" on TikTok has excited an entirely new generation of fans.
The album "Oh! The Ocean" is set to release on February 21, 2025, marking a new era for the band. In July 2024, The Wombats took 50 new tracks into a studio in Echo Park, LA, for a six-week recording session with new producer John Congleton (St. Vincent, Wallows, Death Cab for Cutie). Alongside their signature sounds, the band explores new genres, from shimmering tech-rock to sci-fi pop, futuristic fuzz-rock to bluesy rock 'n' roll, with touches of disco and hip-hop.
