About
The word "soul" has been a thread woven into THE THE's history. From Matt Johnson's early explorations on "Burning Blue Soul" to the upcoming "Ensouled World Tour," the band has delved into the complexities of meaning, existence, and human connection.
Started in the late 1970s, THE THE began as a multimedia experiment, combining their love for musique concrète and traditional songwriting.
Early albums like "Soul Mining" showcased Johnson's multidimensional approach, while "Infected" tackled deeper themes such as desire and social issues. He wasn't afraid to push boundaries, even facing criticism for lyrics like "Armageddon Days Are Here (again)," which eerily predicted future conflicts.
Tragedy struck with the death of Johnson's brother, leading to a period of introspection and the album "Dusk." He later continued to explore different directions, including film music.
A long hiatus ended in 2017 with the documentary "The Inertia Variations," which prompted Johnson's return to the stage with "The Comeback Special" tour. Now, the Ensouled World Tour" in 2024 promises new songs and beloved classics, while fans speculate about the possibility of a new album on the horizon.
