The charismatic and dynamic saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin has made a name for herself on the American jazz scene as a distinctive instrumentalist. She has shared the stage with a number of legendary artists, including Stevie Wonder and Alicia Keys. As the bandleader for Lakecia Benjamin & Soul Squad, she delivers funky and soaring soul jazz.
After several years in the urban jazz genre, she felt compelled to delve into history. The album "Pursuance: The Coltranes," released in 2020, is an engaging project where Benjamin gathered the old Coltrane musicians Ron Carter and Reggie Workman, along with other prominent musicians such as Dee Dee Bridgewater, Marcus Gilmore, Jazzmeia Horn, and Regina Carter. During two intense days in the studio they celebrated and spent time reinterpreting both John and Alice Coltrane's music.
