When Norway's brutal black metal scene exploded in the 1990s, Mayhem was hailed as godfathers, but Emperor stole the show with their musical innovation. They blended furious black metal with majestic melodies from Norwegian folk music and classical music, creating a unique sound that both terrified and fascinated.
Emperor's music wasn't just about Satanism. It also evoked images of the cold loneliness of Norwegian winters and celebrated a pre-Christian era when Scandinavian culture was powerful. Some called this "Viking metal."
Emperor's music became famous worldwide, but the band ran into trouble. Several members became involved in anti-Christian activism and violence, leading to arrests and imprisonment.
Even with prison sentences and lineup changes, Emperor bounced back. New members contributed to the albums "Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk" and "IX Equilibrium," further developing the band's unique style.
Emperor continues with concerts and tours around the world.
